Anodizing is applying an extra thick layer of protection, or in other words the artificially strengthening of the natural oxide layer. Firstly, the aluminum is hung in a galvanic bath, and because of the releasing of oxygen the natural layer of oxide gets thicker. Although the layer will be hard at this point, it is still porous because of the amount of pores. This phase can be used to color the aluminum after which the aluminum profile is placed in a hot bath, causing it to seal.
The colored anodizing can be executed in various ways. It is, for example, possible to anodize with organic or inorganic dye, electrolytic coloring, direct anodizing in color or by making use of self coloring aluminum.
When using organic dye, the dye is added to the hot water bath, so it sticks to the opened pores to form a color layer just before the aluminum is sealed. If the aluminum is colored by making use of inorganic dye, the dye is inserted in the pores and after a chemical reaction color is formed on the aluminum profile.
With electrolytic coloring the profile is laid in a bath in which metal salts are added. By using alternate current a metal sediment on the aluminum is formed.
When making use of direct coloring, the profile is hung in a bath containing special sours. During the anodizing a colored oxidation layer is formed. Another option is to add a substance to the aluminum alloy which forms a colored oxidation layer during the anodizing.
