Steel is a metal consisting of iron and carbon. Actually the word steel is a collectable name for iron alloys that have got the characteristic to be able to be modified in cold condition. Steel can have over 2000 varieties, which makes it a popular construction material.
Steel is made in blast furnaces, after which it is not yet clear enough to be used. To purify the steel a convertor is used, blowing almost clear oxygen through the material at high speed, removing the pollution. The disadvantage of this method is that a lot of oxygen stays behind in the material. By adding aluminum or silicon to the steel, the oxygen is removed.
Steel can be processed in different ways. The two most important methods are cold- and hot rolling. With cold rolling, the steel is rolled at room temperature. This will give it a lasting reforming, which will strengthen the steel. When hot rolling, the steel is rolled at a temperature of about a 1000C. This will give the steel a lower stretch barrier and a larger stretch making it better reshape able, but making it weaker than cold rolled steel.
